Minnesota Flag redesign
Advanced Problems in Graphic Design, Fall 2017
The current flag consists solely of the Minnesota state seal which is far too complex to be seen from a distance. The new proposed flag is a simplified design in which all working parts can be seen from great distances and still remains symbolic to Minnesota.
I began the redesign process by researching the state of Minnesota, its current flag, and other contributing factors to the state’s history. I had also interviewed a few residents of the state as well in order to find out what Minnesota was like at a community level.
I then created as many thumbnail sketches as I possibly could to exhaust the obvious options as well as lead to more successful compositions. After narrowing down my sketches to a final composition I began tweaking specific elements and hue choices until I was satisfied
with the overall appearance of the flag as well as its’ representation
of the state of Minnesota.
